Students and young visitors
To make school visits meaningful, the Cité du cuir has worked with teachers from kindergarten to high school to establish links between school curricula and the museum's exhibits. The tours and activities have been designed to offer a tailor-made educational approach.
Students groups: a flexible offer
Duration: 1 to 2.5 hours
A flexible offer has been designed for school groups:
Guided tour: Discover the scenographic exhibition with a guide.
Creative workshop: Take part in a creative activity.
Guided tour + creative workshop: Discover the exhibition with a guide, followed by a creative activity at the end of the tour.
Each activity is tailored and co-designed with teachers to meet the educational needs of students.
Themed tours
One of the strengths of the Cité du cuir is the wealth of topics covered throughout the permanent exhibition. These topics provide several possible guided tour options, based on the following three main themes:
- The first theme focuses on physics and chemistry. During these tours, particular attention will be paid to the leather tanning process, where we will decipher the chemical reactions that transform raw hides into rot-proof material. We will also linger in the dyeing area to observe the work of color and understand how tanners make it penetrate and then set into the leather. The tour will end with the innovation and leather recycling section, providing an overview of current research on the subject.
- The second theme of the tour will focus on the humanities and social sciences, viewed through the prism of the industrial revolution and the social movements initiated in tanning. These movements led to major advances in workers' conditions and had a strong impact on the economic structure of the town of Saint-Junien.
- The third major theme of the exhibition highlights the applied arts and crafts that have made French glove-making famous. This interpretation of the permanent exhibition focuses on the expertise and technical developments that have enabled artistic and creative revolutions.
